Download Wind Data from NREL from 1998 to 2020 was created by farhad.daruwala@paconsulting.com
Hello,

I am looking to download Wind Resource Files from 1998 to 2020 for SAM as shown in this example for various sites in the US - github.com/NREL/pysam/blob/master/Examples/FetchResourceFileExample.py .
Unfortunately, I can only download data for the years 2007 to 2014 unlike the solar data which you can download going back to 1998. When I try to download wind resource data going back before 2007 or after 2014, I get an error message:

Unable to download file from URLhttps://developer.nrel.gov/api/wind-toolkit/v2/wind/wtk-download.csv?api_key=XXX=POINT(-105.22+39.75)&attributes=windspeed_80m,winddirection_80m,temperature_80m,pressure_100m&names=2020&utc=false&interval=30&email=farhad.daruwala@paconsulting.com.
Message from server: The required 'years' or 'names' parameter must be a number between 2007 and 2014.

  1. How can I get data before 2007 and after 2014? Why do I get this error when solar data is available going back to 1998?
  2. If NREL cannot provide this data, any help with regards to what other sources that can be leveraged and sample code etc. to download data and convert to SRW files would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Hi Farhad,

The NREL WIND Toolkit API endpoints are listed here:

developer.nrel.gov/docs/wind/wind-toolkit/

Best regards,

Replied by farhad.daruwala@paconsulting.com on topic Download Wind Data from NREL from 1998 to 2020
Hi Paul,

Thanks for this but the link is not that helpful. Can you please shed some light on:
  1. Why the Wind Toolkit for the US has data only from 2007 through 2014? Are there plans to enhance this? It is strange that solar resource data is available going back to 1998 but Wind data is not.
  2. In the meantime, are there other non NREL resources that can be used to pull Wind resource data that can be used for SAM? I didn't see anything on the link you mentioned so what other external sources not maintained by NREL would you recommend?
Thanks

Hi Farhad,

I'm sorry that I do not have answers to those questions.
