SVAL LOOKUP ERROR with Created TMY3 file was created by Volzotan
Hey,
I get the sval lookup error that has been reported in several support threads (which I have read ).
I get the error when I want to simulate a CSP case using a file I created with the SAM "Create TMY3 file" tool. As a base TMY3 file I used one of the pre-installed US location sample TMY3 files.
I can't find any mistakes in the TMY3 file when comparing it to the sample TMY3 file.
You can find the TMY3 file attached.
Best regards, thanks and looking forward to your help
Lukas

Hello,
Thank you for researching the other threads before posting your question, and for attaching your file.
I don't see any obvious formatting problems with your file.
The fact that the SAM's flat plate PV model runs fine with the data, but the physical trough model fails, suggests that the problem may be with one of the data elements that the PV model does not use, which the table in the Weather Data Overview help topic shows are dew-point temperature, wet-bulb temperature, and relative humidity.
Are the values for those elements in your file consistent with each other? If you got that data from different sources, it is possible that inconstencies between those inter-related values may be causing the thermal energy calculations to fail.
Best regards,
Paul.

Thanks for your fast reply!
I just spent 2 hours in experimenting with the data, looking for the mistake. Your clue sounded completely convincing. Now I just found the source of trouble to be completely independent from the weather data (and I could bang my head against a wall ):
The simulation crashes because of the Station state name "Saudi Arabia". I tested various names: The crash is caused by a space bar between two words (space bars in front of or behind a word don't cause a crash).
Life is cruel
Maybe you can find the error in the code and eliminate it, it might spare future users a lot of nerves
best regards
Lukas

Hi Lukas,
Thanks for sharing your experience, and sorry for all the trouble. The "State" field in the TMY3 file is often the culprit, but I was not aware of the space limitation. That field is intended to store a two-letter state abbreviation following the convention in the United States.
The next version of SAM will use a new weather file reader that is more flexible and will hopefully reduce this kind of issue.
Best regards,
Paul.
