Battery Storage Question was created by David L
Hello,

My understanding from searching the forums is that SAM does not support modeling a residential PV system that is integrated with a battery, such as SolarCity is deploying in California using Tesla batteries. Is this also the case with the new beta version?

If so, are there any recommendations for how PV-battery integrated systems have been manually represented in the past, or are there any recommendations for other publicly available models that allow for such systems to be modeled?

And above all, thanks for the work you do in constructing and maintaining SAM - it is a great service to many.

Best,

David

Dear David,

You are correct: SAM does not model storage with PV systems, and no, the new version that is currently in Beta testing does not model batteries.

I am not aware of any techniques for using SAM to model a PV system with storage.

Other models that I know of that do model PV systems with batteries are HOMER and RETScreen.

Best regards,
Paul.

Dear Shom Show,
The Vehicle Advisor software and documentation is available on sourceforge.net:
Advanced Vehicle Simulator
Since I posted my response above, we've received funding to develop an electric battery model for SAM's photovoltaic performance model, and hope to have a version ready for release around the summer of 2015.
Best regards,

Paul.
