Will SAM add battery systems like Iron-Air and Sodium-Ion performance criteria to the modeler?

SAM can model lead acid, lithium-ion, and flow batteries.

Best regards,
Paul.

The one big difference with sodium-ion batteries is their charge and discharge times.  They can be up to 20 hours cycle time.  If we can set Max C-rates to reflect their behavior would that not work in the modeler?

Hello,

SAM's battery model uses internal algorithms to represent battery voltage, temperature, degradation and other characteristics that vary with battery chemistry. I don't think you could model a sodium-ion battery very well by modifying the inputs for a lithium-ion battery.

You can find documentatin of SAM's battery model algorithms on the Battery Publications page of the SAM website: sam.nrel.gov/battery-storage/battery-publications.html .

Best regards,
Paul.

Thanks for the reply, Paul.  Sodium-ion is quickly becoming a viable eco-responsible alternative to lithium for microgrids.  The interest in microgrids is growing quickly.  Just last week Colorado Energy Office announced their microgrid roadmap ( energyoffice.colorado.gov/microgrid-roadmap ).  It would be great if your team would roll sodium-ion performance specs into the modeler.  Natron Energy ( natron.energy ) has posted some performance specifications for their solution.
