Energy arbitrage vs peak shaving in SAM was created by schmidly
Paul, is there a way for SAM to optimize its battery dispatch algorithms around energy arbitrage?  Right now, it looks like SAM optimizes around peak shaving or DCM only - correct?  I'm looking at a project where the peak vs off peak TOU energy price differential is $.13/kWh and the demand charge differential is only $4/kW.  I'd like SAM to optimize around the energy differential instead of the peak if possible. Can SAM do this?  Thanks, Brian

Hi Brian,

SAM's peak shaving dispatch option for behind-the-meter batteries attempts to dispatch the battery to reduce demand charges by discharging the battery to coincide with peak load, taking into consideration demand rates.

The REopt optimization may accomplish what you need: It runs an optimization routine outside of SAM and calculates a dispatch schedule for the battery as described under "Optimal Sizing and Dispatch from REopt" in the Battery Cell and System Help topic: samrepo.nrelcloud.org/help/battery_storage_btm.htm. REopt also calculates an optimal battery size.

Otherwise, you can experiment with different manual dispatch schedules.

Best regards,
Paul.
