Solar Tower to provide both heat and Power was created by sabrina.hasni
Hi,
I want to design a solar tower so that it can provide both heat and Power to an industrial plant. What is the best way to set it up in SAM.?
Shall I specify a number higher than 1 as multiple of the power cycle in the dispatch control page ?
kind regards
Sabrina

Hi Sabrina,

SAM's power tower model uses heliostat defocusing to limit the output of the solar field to within the power cycle's design parameters, so oversizing the solar field will not result in excess heat for use by a process heat application.

Best regards,
Paul.

Hi Paul,
Many thanks for the reply. The solar tower is combined with parabolic trough and used mainly to store heat during the day and releasing the heat during night time for the power cycle. The solar tower will only deliver 10% of the total power cycle with the rest going to storage.
Is there a way to configure this in SAM?
kind regards
Sabrina

Hi Sabrina,

SAM is not designed to model this type of system.

You might be able to approximate this design using the Combine Systems macro, but that would model a separate power cycle for the tower and trough fields, and would also model separate thermal energy storage for the two systems.

To use the Combine Systems macro, click Macros under the Simulate button, and then click the macro name.

Best regards,
Paul.
