Thermal TES freeze protection in trough phys. was created by F.Haag
Hello Paul,
in my parabolic trough plant (phys.) simulation the parasitic thermal TES freeze protection makes a massive peak while not reaching the tank heater set point (see attached image). Is there anything besides the tank temperature which affects the heater setting?
Thank you and best regards!
Florian

Dear Florian,
Chapter 4.1.3 of the physical trough reference manual (available here ) describes how SAM calculates the storage freeze protection energy. It is limited by either the tank heater temperature set point, or by the maximum heating rate. In the case you show, it looks like the heating rate is limiting the temperature of the storage fluid.
Best regards,
Paul.

Thank you!
But I'm not sure how to understand the heating rate equation. Is there a way to avoid these peaks in the parasitic of TES?

Dear Florian,
Would you mind emailing me your .sam file so we can investigate this further?
Best regards,
Paul.
