Minimum pool years for TMY3 data? was created by nino
I checked the "Users Manual for TMY3 Data Sets" and it says that TMY3 files were derived mostly from a 1976-2005 period where available, and a 1991-2005 period of record for all other locations.
So the minimum pool years is 14 years (2005-1991).
Still in the section "1.5 TMY3 Site Selection" it is mentioned that:
"No stations with less than a ten-year data pool were included in the TMY3 data set."
So basically the minimum pool years is 10 not 14?
Did I get this right?
Thank you for the reply.

Hello,
According to the "Best Practices Handbook for the Collection and Use of Solar Resource Data for Solar Energy Applications" ( PDF 8.9 MB ), the period of record should be at least 30 years in order for a long term dataset to be representative of the climate at a given location. It is possible to create typical year data for a shorter period of record, but then that data represents the weather over that period rather than the longer term climate. See Chapter 5 of the handbook for a more detailed discussion of the topic.
Best regards,
Paul.
