Weather Data

Are you looking for weather data to use with SAM? SAM can automatically download weather files from the NREL National Solar Radiation Data base (NSRDB), which covers locations in the Western Hemisphere from roughly 20° South to 60° North, including the continental United States, Hawaii and southern portions of Canada and Alaska, Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America (including most of Brazil). The NSRDB data also covers South Asia and parts of Central Asia, China, and Southeast Asia.

To use the NSRDB data in SAM for Western Hemisphere locations, click the Download a weather file for your location button on SAM's Location and Resource page to download a single typical-year (TMY) file, or click the Choose files to download (advanced) button to download multiple files for the location. For locations in Asia, click Choose files button.

You can also download files directly from the NSRDB website using the online NSRDB Data Viewer to download weather files to a folder on your computer, and then click the Folder settings on SAM's Location and Resource page to add the folder to SAM's solar resource library.

For more information about where to find weather data to use with SAM, please see the Weather Page on SAM website: https://sam.nrel.gov/weather

For locations not covered by the NSRDB, you might also be interested this tool that downloads data from the NASA MERRA database and converts it to the SAM CSV format, described in these posts: https://sam.nrel.gov/node/71040 https://sam.nrel.gov/node/75273

Hi,
How can I download weather data (TMY) for Indian locations using latitude and longitude from NSRDB Data Viewer?

tarun_aseri

I tried to download the weather data using SAM, but could not get success. I tried for Jodhpur (Lat:23.20,Long:73.00). SAM come up with the error "The 'wkt' parameterr did not match any known data points". Whereas the NSRDB proving weather data for India, if I can access though point selection. But I required weather data for particular latitude and longitude.

Hello,

In order to download data for locations in Asia from the NREL National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB), you have to use the NSRDB website. The Download button in SAM 2017.1.17 will not work for those locations. Instead you should use the online NSRDB Data Viewer at:

https://nsrdb.nrel.gov/nsrdb-viewer

This video shows the steps:

Paul.
